IPL petitioner asks Modi for loan to bail out Bihar cricket

Within days of the Supreme Court judgement, which barred N Srinivasan from contesting the BCCI elections and struck down a rule that allowed cricket administrators from having commercial interests in cricket leagues, the petitioner in the IPL corruption case, Aditya Verma, has sought a loan from Lalit Modi in order to conduct league cricket in Bihar.

Verma is the secretary of Cricket Association of Bihar, which is not recognised by the BCCI, while Modi, the former IPL commissioner, had in November admitted he was financing the petition aimed at making IPL corruption free.

“I humple (sic) request to you kindly sanction me the loan for Cricket Association of Bihar to conduct the cricket league in Bihar for the year 2014 because association has already spent lot of legal expense during cricket battle,” read the mail written by Verma and marked to Modi and also forwarded to the media.

Incidentally, the email contained an attachment, which was a ‘professional bill’ sent by Chandrashekhar Verma, advocate, Patna High Court, to Aditya Verma.

Under the title ‘Memo of Fees’, the advocate has charged an amount of Rs 1.20 lakh for appearing before the two-member bench of the Supreme Court on three occasions last year — September 1, November 10 and November 14. An amount of Rs 50,000 has been charged under the sub-head: Conference with seniors, while clerkage and miscellaneous expenses have been charged at Rs 25,000 and Rs 20,000, respectively.

When contacted, Verma said he would recover the legal fees from the new committee members of the BCCI, who are set to be elected within six weeks of the SC judgement. “I will ask members of the new BCCI committee to pay me back the legal expenses that I have incurred in my fight to clean up Indian cricket. My battle was for the sake of Indian cricket and the new administrators, whoever they are, will understand that money has been spent for fighting the case. We don’t have money to conduct league cricket in Bihar now,” Verma said.

In November, Modi had said he was financing the petition against Srinivasan and others. Modi’s admission was also brought to the notice of the Supreme Court during the hearing in the IPL corruption case.
