Authorities say at least 50 people have been injured and 40 arrested after fierce clashes between Red Star and Partizan fans. The riots erupted before the match between the two biggest Belgrade rival clubs at the Red Star stadium in the capital on Saturday. The start of the match had to be postponed for 40 minutes when hooligans hurled stones at each other and battled with sticks. The play was also stopped for seven minutes because of flares hurled on to the pitch. Several fans were bloodied. Police say 20 officers were injured when they tried to separate the fighting groups. The match ended in a goalless draw, giving Partizan a five-point lead over Red Star in the standings.

Indian discus thrower Vikas Gowda threw a season’s best effort of 65.75m to win the Triton Invitational at La Jolla in San Diego in United States on Sunday. Gowda, the reigning Commonwealth Games champion, added half a meter to his performance at Chula Vista a few days back where he had thrown 65.25m to qualify for World Championships in Beijing in August. Sunday’s performance was just 25cm short of Rio Olympics qualifying mark. The 31-year-old Gowda holds the national record of 66.28m.

The Zimbabwe cricket union has managed to convince its players to tour Pakistan for the one-off limited overs series in May but have asked the Pakistan Cricket Board for special financial incentives for their players as well. According to sources in the PCB the ZCU have conveyed to the host country that it would have to pay the daily allowances and match fees to the Zimbabwean players. “They have set forth some new conditions as their players were reluctant to tour Pakistan because of security concerns,” one source said.

Mick Schumacher Jnr enhanced the famous name by claiming victory in only his third Formula Four race on his debut weekend. The 16-year-old son of seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher was the fastest over the 18 laps at the Oschersleben track, between Hanover and Berlin. Having started second on the grid, Schumacher Jnr controlled the race flawlessly. His place on the podium caps a successful weekend. The German won the best rookie title on his debut behind the Formula Four wheel when he finished ninth on Saturday despite starting 19th on the grid. Schumacher Jnr then finished 12th on Sunday morning before winning the afternoon’s race.

Auckland City maintained their iron grip on the Oceania Champions League by winning their fifth consecutive title after edging Team Wellington 4-3 on penalties on Sunday to book another spot at the lucrative FIFA Club World Cup. Auckland’s Portuguese forward Joao Moreira slipped a 14th minute penalty but Wellington, levelled with just 11 minutes of regular time remaining after a blistering strike from Ian Hogg.
