Sports bar: Sunny demands Rs 1.90 cr compensation

Sunil Gavaskar has asked for an amount of Rs 1.90 crore as remuneration for rendering his services as president BCCI-IPL during the seventh edition. “Gavaskar has written a letter to the BCCI. He has sought an amount to the tune of Rs 1.90 crore which is equivalent to the money he had to forego during the period as he couldn’t take up his media assignments which includes TV commentary, writing columns and also acting as media pundit,” a senior BCCI official, who was present at the working committee meeting, said.

Premature end to Sturridge’s season
Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge’s frustrating season looks like ending prematurely, his manager Brendan Rodgers said on Monday. The 25-year-old England forward has been sidelined by hip and thigh injuries and has not played since the FA Cup quarter-final win over Blackburn three weeks ago. “It has been difficult for Daniel,” Rodgers told reporters before the Premier League match at Hull City on Tuesday. “It’s just been one of those seasons for him where it has been very unfortunate. We are going to have to monitor that day by day and see where he’s at. When he’s been fit he’s been brilliant for the team. We need to get him back fit and consistently playing. But we will have to see if that is going to be this season or for pre-season.”

Yuki moves to Rd 2, Myneni quits midway
Yuki Bhambri tamed a fighting Yuya Kibi to advance to the second round but it was curtains for Saketh Myneni, who was forced to retire mid-way in the first round of the USD 75000 ATP Challenger event. Yuki, ranked 216, fought off the challenge posed by Japanese qualifier 6-1 4-6 6-3 after battling for one hour and 53 minutes. 244th ranked Myneni, who is struggling due to bad stomach for the last couple of days, could even complete the first set as he quit the contest when he was trailing 2-5 against Japanese Hiroki Moriya, ranked 170.

India win gold in President’s Cup
Pugilists Rakesh Kumar (69kg) and Harpal Singh (75kg) struck gold as India were crowned champions for the first time in the 22nd President’s Cup Boxing Tournament in Palembang, Indonesia. The Indian team logged 33 points to finish ahead of second-placed Mongolia after Rakesh and Harpal’s gold medals took the country’s total tally to four gold and a bronze at the end of the event. Women boxers also won two gold.

Oscar out of hospital after head injury
Chelsea midfielder Oscar is out of the hospital following a heavy collision with an opponent during a Premier League game that left the Brazil international with a swollen face. Oscar was injured about 15 minutes into the 0-0 draw at Arsenal on Sunday when goalkeeper David Ospina collided with him. The midfielder continued playing after treatment, but was substituted at halftime and taken to the hospital to have some scans. Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho said Monday that Oscar “went immediately to his house yesterday night’’ from the hospital and slept at home. Oscar is expected at the club’s training ground on.

Shamini in World TT main draw
India enjoyed a profitable opening day with Shamini Kumaresan qualifying for the main draw of the women’s singles event at the World Table Tennis Championships. Shamini qualified by topping her group which included Gillian Edwards of Scotland and Nino Neridee of Venezuela. She defeated Gillian Edwards 11-7, 9-11, 11-3, 13-11, 8-11, 11-8. She then scored a 11-7, 11-3, 8-11, 11-3, 7-11, 11-8 win over Nino Neridee. The other two women players Mouma Das and Manika Batra are already in the main draw based on the world ranking. In the men’s singles qualification groups. G. Sathiyan and Sanil Shetty topped their respective group to enter the next stage. Sathiyan defeated A. Abdulla ( UAE) in straight sets.
